FREE TAX ASSISTANCE is available if you earned $49,000 or less in 2009
Purpose
To transform and stabilize our community by giving hard-working people and their families the opportunity to move toward financial independence.
Objectives
- Increase the number of residents applying for and receiving Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) and Child Tax Credits (CTC).
- Increase the amount of disposable income to hard-working people.
- Decrease usage of high cost tax services and predatory financial products and services.
- Link EITC recipients with other economic self-sufficiency programs.
Earned Income Limits for EITC
- Families with one child who earn less than $35,463 in 2009 (or less than $40,463 if married filing jointly) could be eligible for a tax credit of up to $3,043
- Families with two or more children who earn less than $40,295 in 2009 (or less than $45,295 if married filing jointly) could be eligible for a tax credit of up to $5,028
- Workers without a qualifying child who earn less than $13,440 in 2009 (or less than $18,440 if married filing jointly) could be eligible for a tax credit of up to $457
- Families with threee or mroe children who earn less than $43,279 in 2009 (or less than $48,279 if married filing jointly) could be eligible for a tax credit of up to $5,657
Who is missing out on Earned Income Tax Credits:
- Workers not required to file tax returns due to no "tax liability"
- Workers with low-income or a history of welfare receipt
- Workers without children
- Workers who have recently lost jobs and may have never before been eligible
- New parents
- Grandparents
- Single parents
- Foster parents
- Parents raising disabled children
- Workers who have English as a second language
- Eligible immigrants, especially Latino families
